La hermandad de la uva – John Fante

La hermandad de la uva

A must-read literary recommendation. A jewel. Nice way to discover a talent…a funny book, easy to read.

The best stonemason in America, old nick molise, is again in crisis with his wife. Neither child wants to intervene, Nick has no intention of asking anyone for anything, especially when he has a great time with his old friends and hosts a lot of projects. His dream was a tribe of sons followers of his art, and instead has a brakeman, a bank clerk and a writer. Henry boards a plane to immerse himself in his parents' world. His father invites him to a useless and absurd company: build a deer hide dryer, in a town two thousand meters high. Henry hesitates, then accept, attracted to daddy's bunch of wacky little friends…

John Fante (1909-1983), son of Italian immigrants from very humble backgrounds, He worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and dedicated his life to literature, although he only achieved full recognition from critics and the public after his death.. His work achieved glory in Europe before in his own country., in which he was posthumously recognized and awarded in 1987 with the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN.

John Fante is a great unknown in our country, but without a doubt he is one of the masters of North American narrative art. The characters found in his novels are almost never heroes., Rather, they are lazy and thugs with a great sense of humor.. in this novel, Fante makes a non-conformist portrait of the day-to-day life of our lives; the disappointments, goals not achieved, the sense of guilt, the role of the Catholic religion in our daily habits… The author describes all these situations with perfect irony and gives us a critical vision of life..

John Fante was rescued from oblivion by Charles Bukowski, who influenced his work to be published after many years of being ignored. Most of his successful books belong to the noir genre., but The Brotherhood of the Grape departs from that current. I should add that I read it on the recommendation of a bookstore employee., whose suggestion I think was correct. He is a good writer who deserves more recognition..
