Hace ya un tiempo que leí la novela de Saramago, Blindness. La verdad es que me impactó y han quedado en mi mente algunas de las imágenes construidas por mi cerebro al leer la obra: esa película particular, individual e intransferible que fabrica nuestra mente siempre que uno tiene un libro entre manos. Y ahora que en España se ha estrenado la adaptación en cine no he dudado en ir a verla.
En uno de mis últimos artículos os animaba a leer la novela. Para los que os dio mucha pereza empezar a leer un libro con muchas páginas, opción muy respetable, al menos os queda la posibilidad de ver la peli.
El argumento es muy sencillo: una epidemia asola una ciudad anónima. Poco a poco todos sus habitantes se van quedando ciegos menos una mujer. Todo lo que pasa desde ese momento se va desarrollando con toda lógica: reclusión y marginación de los enfermos para frenar la epidemia, estigmatización social, el contagio se extiende a toda la población, lucha por la supervivencia, saqueos… In the end, se llega a una anarquía total.
La película me ha gustado, sobre todo la fotografía con uso de colores fríos. Evidentemente se ahorra muchos pasajes de la novela, pero no escatima en detalles y retrata la crudeza, la angustia, la desesperación y egoísmo del hombre frente a la supervivencia. Sin embargo falta fuerza en describir la diferencia de actitudes humanas en situaciones extremas, algo que es muy patente en la novela, y parece que interesa más reflejar en imágenes el desastre apocalíptico: algo muy común en cine comercial.
